Well, there are many existing file formats supporting metadata.
This library basically provide a unified interface to access metadata
in these files and a standard way to handle metadata with RDF.
So it is just for convenience.
Otherwise, we have to deal with each file format one-by-one.
(3.2 supports TIFF, JPEG, JPEG 2000, GIF, PNG, HTML,PDF,
AI (Adobe Illustrator), SVG/XML, PSD (Adobe Photoshop),
 PostScript and EPS, DNG.
 4.0 is coming out).

As for the license, I am not a legal expert.
So I cannot comment on it.
I just wonder whether it is a license GNA! accept.

It seems to be an open-source project for metadata handling.
And the metadata is transferable from machine to machine.
Although it is in C++, it won't be a problem after GCC 4.1 is widely used.

It looks like it's just a library for embedding metadata into a file,
similar to what ID3 or EXIF do. So it would mainly be useful only to
people developing a new file format, AFAICT, and not as useful for
people wanting to store metadata for existing files.

Legal stuff:
Briefly looking at the license, I was a bit surprised at how
permissive it is, coming from a big company like Adobe. It looks like
it's actually compatible with the LGPL and BSD licenses. One thing
that might be problemmatic is the clause:
"If you choose to distribute the Software in a commercial product, you
do so with
the understanding that you agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless Adobe
against any losses, damages and costs arising from the claims, lawsuits or other
legal actions arising out of such distribution."
which seems to mean that if a company sells a CD that contains Adobe
XMP, they must agree to defend Adobe against any lawsuits from people
who bought the CD. But I'm not a legal expert, so take that with a
grain of salt.
