By the way, Etoile need a display manager and a session manager. We can write one from scratch. But in order to communicate with xwindow and other xwindow applications, like firefox, openoffice, etc, it might be better to follow xwindow protocol. If someone want to port from existing applications, there are the choices:
Display manager: 1. wdm: http://voins.program.ru/wdm/. It is based in WINGs, which is pretty similar to GNUstep. And it work pretty well, but involves in some system calls, which is platform-dependent. 2. slim: http://slim.berlios.de/. In C++, ported from login.app. 3. gdm: from Gnome. Session manager: 1. xfce-session: http://www.xfce.org Use GTK. 2. rox-session: http://rox.sourceforge.net/desktop/ROX-Session Written in Python. 3. gnome-session: from Gnome. That's pretty much all we need in order to have a desktop environment.
