It has been discussed in the past (on etoile-dev probably) and there
are still some references on Installer web page: <http://www.etoile-
project.org/etoile/mediawiki/index.php?title=Installer>
I was personally quite interested by the idea and the framework.
But nobody is working on Installer for a long time. I'm not even sure
it's in a usable state.

It's entirely my fault. After a strong beginning - since I started
from scratch in Objective C - real life took the hold of me and and
started to spend less and less time working on it. I'm sure this story
is nothing new, is something quite common in free software projects
and with people that like meare a bit manic-depressive about things.

I've been reading every mail from the list though, and following every
development closely. As for the topic at hand, I perfectly remember
the argument about the auto-update feature, and it's available in the
archives (gnustep-dev, at the time if I'm not mistaken). Installer.app
is working on my laptop and from the last published versions it mainly
differs in interface and several bug fixes (inclusing more or less
full OSX pkg compatibility using some ugly tricks). Actually, it was
this UI change that in the end contributed to my boredom, since in the
beginning I liked to create UI's and felt intimitaded by the
programming but as the time went on programming was fun but the
creation of a good UI very dull and error prone. This auto-update
capability had the time another project involved, can't remember then
name, it was a file with some info that got retrieved from the
Internet... Mac-something... I'm not sure that Sparkle existed, but
the ideas behind were IIRC greatly appreciated by several Étoilé
members. The discussion at the time more or less proved than there is
not pratical objection to it.

In any event, I'm sure that with a free week - given the expertise
that in general the project members have and that far surpass mine -
anyone can create something similar. I'm writing now because I've
started to mess with it yet again, picking up from where I've stopped
and trying to make it really useful. Given my erratic pattern though,
I'm not able to make any promises even to myself, so as I said before,
if anyone feels that they are interested in making one I'll be the
first to applaude.

Cheers,

Frederico Muñoz
