UUIDs are basically all generated by passing some data to a hashing function. It would be an afternoon's work to write a wrapper around the OpenSSL hashing functions to generate them. If there's no existing code we want to import under a sufficiently friendly license, I'd be happy to write this. We'll need it for CO at some point, so it's worth having.
