In the past (in old Mac OS times), we had applications loading time  
and memory consumption issues when more than one hundred fonts were  
loaded. I think, it's mostly a thing of the past these days :-)

This is the important reason because some applications provides their  
own menu or panel which quickly gets unusable when you have more than  
few dozen of fonts.

Another reason was to solve font conflicts. I don't know if this  
still holds. At least I haven't experimented such problem for a long  
time.
