It may explain why you don't have anything after log into etoile.
Do you have 'etoile_system' in GNUstep/System/Tools or GNUstep/Local/Tools ?
Do you have SystemTaskList.plist in GNUstep/System/Library/Etoile ?
It has all the applications to launch and you can actually launch it one-by-one.

What's your /usr/share/xsession/etoile.desktop look like ?
It should launch /usr/local/bin/etoile.
Then what's your /usr/local/bin/etoile ?
It should launch etoile_system.

If you want, you can just start Azalea with 'openapp Azalea',
then you have a window manager running.
