Can't really point you in any direction other to say Mastering is mainly a
subjective LISTENING process and it changes from project to project.

In the shn community it is generally frowned upon "Mastering" shows since it
changes the sonic qualities of the original seed. That having been said
there are plenty of people who tweak their recordings for their own personel
enjoyment. If a Mastered show is going to be reseeded make sure you include
all the info in the txt file.

If you want to play around with some shows, get a hold of cool edit, or some
other audio app and see what you can do. Play with the EQ, the compression,
and other effects and listen for what it does to the sound.

Slightly off topic but a point I want everyone to consider. Every
commercial CD is mastered before it is released. WHY??!!?? An engineer has
already mixed the tracks, tweaked everything just right, often with the
artists input. Lastly, it is mixed down to a digital format(often to analog
two-track but that's beside the point) and sent to a Mastering engineer WHO
COMPLETELY CHANGES THE SOUND OF THE MIX! Why is this done!!!

Mastering was extremely important in the days of LP's, a medium with
limitations to be considered before transferring mixes, especially
dynamicly. However CD's have none of these limitations yet Mastering
engineers are still freakin' employed!!

My point: Mastering should not be done to ANYTHING! It's a worthless
process used by the Record companies so they can have the LOUDEST CD on the
market/Radio.

For example-Phish's most recent set of live releases. I have an analog of
the Sugarbush show that sounds better (minus the analog hiss) than the CD's
- Same sources, Different lineage.

Same goes for HamptonComesAlive- Analog AKG460's sound better that
sbd>DAT>mastering Engineer>CD

Oh well, I dirgress. Back to your regularly scheduled program...
