inetd (internet daemon) is called the "superserver".  If a port is
contacted, inetd starts the process for that port.  It's a sort-of
server-on-demand daemon for a machine that does not need to run all the
servers at once. or to restart processes if they die and you want them to
restart when somebody requests a service.  inetd.conf is a great way to
shut off ports and services that you do not want to run for security
pruposes.
