Alas, one of the (many) flaws of X is revealed.

As a general rule, X runs at the resolutions you tell it to, based off of
XF85Config (wherever that's hiding on your system). There are a few editors
for it, but, a few cavets from my experience:
You simply cannoy change color depths without restarting X. Don't try,
don't waste your time trying to trick it, either.

If you have multiple resolutions defined, alt-+ and alt-- (that's
alt-plus and alt-minus) will cycle through them. Fair warning, if you don't
have the virtual desktop size set, some windows may be Lost at lower
   resolutions. ;)

As for Xconfigurator not behaving.. welcome to the club? I found I had to
just give up on it and write the modlines myself.
