I switched from kmail to mutt earlier this year. If you select
kmail's File->Compact All Folders, it turns the folders into regular
Berkeley mailboxes, which many Unix mail readers can use.
I personally love Mutt, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're
fairly Unix savvy.
