Francis,

Try turning on the "debug" option, and then watch any messages with a 
command like "tail -f /var/log/messages" which may give you some reason for
the disconnects.

More information about your system would be helpful to anyone trying to help
you, such as what distribution you are using, and what the system messages
say.  Also, it's likely that someone is dialing the same ISP that you are
trying to reach, and may have some insight to a peculiarity of that ISP.
