well, good for you. i'm glad redhat worked for you. i find RPM's to be
clumsy and i just plain don't like using them. KDE seemed kind of kewl, but
every time i tried to run something using KDE libraries, it'd crap out.
Gnome, on the other hand, hasn't failed me yet.

as far as tar.gz'ed files, yes, i work with them too. as much as possible.
i like getting the source code, just in case there's something i may be able
to tweak with. the problem i found in redhat was that very few things
compiled. it was always looking for libraries that weren't there (even if
the library did exist...)

personal experience. the spice of life.

uhm, aren't the current nvidia detonator drivers written by nvidia
themselves? in the windoze wurld, we call those "reference" drivers.
that's because everybody with said video card can use them, regardless of
manufacturer. so yes, they can be open sourced (i think.) slap the GPL on
them to protect their "intelectual property."

one of the things that drew me to nvidia in the first place was just how
solid their windoze drivers were (back in 2K, both the year and the OS...).
and they updated them constantly. ATI, on the other hand, had a reputation
for putting out one shitty driver and then forgetting about it. 3dfx was
just as bad. and don't even get started on S3. in windoze, nvidia was the
way to go.

i don't use windows anymore (well, except at work...) which is now why i'm
contemplating a new ATI Radeon LE. gotta start gearing up for this year's
tax return. dual T-Birds, 1gb DDR RAM, it's on like donkey kong.
