I've forwarded your comments on www.euglug.org to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], but I doubt we'll get any response until he returns
from Chile. I wish that he'd attributed the contributions to the home
page, its description of EUGLUG as a volunteer effort applies to the rest
of the prose on the site. I expect either he or I will forward your
critique to the mailing list after he has a chance to read it, it's sure
to kick off a lively discussion (OK, probably a flame-war).

Although we're leavened with a few technical professionals, EUGLUG
is an amateur effort. We don't know how many we are, not much less than a
hundred, judging by the subscriber list for [EMAIL PROTECTED] (but the
majority choose not to post). Fifteen to thirty at a time show up for the
weekly clinics, a different mix of faces from one clinic to the next. I've
never seen a count for the monthly meetings I've yet to attend (Saturday
afternoons are convenient for everybody who doesn't drive 12 hours of a
Saturday night). We know we're not all the GNU/Linux users in Eugene,
thanks to BikeFriday.

I'm not sure that editing the various authors of the prose to
reflect your concerns would be honest. As far as I can see, people's use
of Linux as opposed to GNU/Linux pretty much mirrors the nomenclature of
their chosen distribution. Debian users tend to follow your lead, but the
bulk of our people use Mandrake, RedHat or SuSE. For what it's worth, I
agree with you, I run Debian GNU/Linux currently, but I'm still likely to
drop the "GNU/" when expressing myself informally. Mea culpa.

Your characterization of the page as "likely to influence users"
is one of the better backhanded compliments I've ever seen. We did it for
ourselves, and we are the users you want us to influence.
