Google is run off of a 10,000 node linux cluster. Don't know about the database, but I 
would guess they are using a proprietary database. As for how the search works, see 
the links below.

I'm curious about the algorythm that can churn through all that data and
look for the specific keyword I entered and return a meaningful result
in such a quick time.

Anyone know what kind of tricks they use?  I've heard they use Linux.
Do they use any known databases?
