Darn. I'm not a Mandrake expert, but have used the 8.x versions a bit in the past... here are some questions to try to get to the bottom of your issues:
Did it fail to complete installation? (Or just X?) ie, can you boot properly, at least into text? (or is the lock-up you mention terminal, as in serious?) Did the network failure come after attempting to use DHCP, or hard-coded network settings? Do you know your installation media to be good? (did someone else just use it successfully? if they were burnt from downloaded ISO images, have been md5-verified?) Can someone who knows Mdk8.1 better tell if it *requires* a network connection to successfully install? That seems a bit much, to me. good luck! I have some RedHat 8.0 CD's, if you want a different-but-also-most-recent distro... but I personally still prefer RH7.3. Go on, shout about debian and bsd's, I already know I'm one of the few RedHat users here. It works for me = ) and the company!!
