Dirk,

visit http://ftp3.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/

and then http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/en/codecs.html

(which explains to unpack the codec files to your /usr/local/lib/codecs
 directory)

Furthermore, the following link explains that you should use the
-forceidx options with mplayer for RealMedia:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/en/formats.html#realmedia

My RH9 system, with a set of existing mplayer codecs, did not have the
/usr/local/lib/codecs directory, but I unpacked the rp8 and rp9 codecs
into there, and made sure they were world-readable.

I still couldn't get it to play, anyway, but I do indeed still have some
legacy config corrupting my environment, so your mileage may vary!

let me know if you need specific help,
unpacking .tar.bz2's or otherwise...

regards,

   Ben
