Please don't take this personally, Russ, but, at last survey, there were literally thousands of such free shell accounts open on efn, and though it can't be contended that this was an outrageous drain on our resources, it did represent one of our major liabilities.
Essentially, the amount we were in the hole was almost exactly equal to the "value" of services folks were getting here for free. Other words, we were in hock for precisely what we gave to the community.
I wouldn't take it personally. I helped run Digital Forest in it's early days, and know how easy it is to get red ink...
I also know that my particular account couldn't have been much of a drain. I probably logged into it 5 times in the last two years, and the only mail coming through (forwarded to my dimstar address) was spam and notices from admins. :)
In other words, $5 a month is a good deal for a shell account... if it's used. Mine wasn't used hardly at all. We all make choices.
All this said, I did think OPN was committed to keeping up those free shell accounts. Fact, epud promised in the contract to dedicate some racks and a server in the control room for precisely this purpose. I might suggest you write to Ray Cesaletti ( [EMAIL PROTECTED]), or Mike Jackson ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and inquire whether free shell accounts exist anymore or not.
That was my understanding as well.
As I stated, I only used the account for remote testing of my own and other servers, and even then, only when I couldn't find another way to test things. So, other that the longevity of the account, it's probably not that big a deal.
