Hey Allen: You really can't go wrong with OS X for usability purposes. I haven't used an Apple desktop in a long time, but my girlfriend has been very happy with her PowerBook (1.5 years). She is a student also. They are quite affordable and will run Office and other apps that will likely be needed.
