It is very helpful for seeing where the slow hop is.
Also watch out for your MTU settings of course -- doing a series of pings with packet sizes (-s) just below your MTU might help you see if you've got a problem. Problems can be common with MTU if you're setting up a decent segmented LAN and DMZ, and esp. if you are using VLANs, beware of the escapsulation needs.
