Allen,
    I'm glad you figured out what was going on.  I've had issues with 
customizing some things in the KDE menus myself before, but never what you have 
seen. (usually kicker just disappears.)  I'll file this one away for future 
reference.  Thanks for sharing your resolution.

I regret that I have unnecessarily tarnished the reputation of Kubuntu.
I found the problem that was causing the crashes.  There was a problem
in how I customized /etc/profile and other shell startup files.
After a rather painful debug session I was able to narrow the problem
down to those files.  Now that the problem is fixed Kubuntu seems
quite stable.
