It's a very active community of blind Linux users and developers. I've
subscribed for years because I like to stay attuned to accessibility
issues on Linux for the blind.

You might also check the apps and libraries available for the
Emacspeak audio desktop. <http://emacspeak.sourceforge.net/>.  Chances
are very good that your friend is already using Emacspeak. The
voice-enabled multimedia app list might be particularly helpful.
