> top - 18:23:15 up 1:07, 2 users, load average: 2.37, 5.22, 5.33 The 1 minute average is 2.37 -- but the 5/15 min averages are over 5 !!! i.e. we may not see the culprit, nor can we tell if swap was maxed out when the load was over 5. You could get an idea by watching the LED indicating disk activity (if your box has such)
> PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND > 1951 wes 20 0 535m 128m 14m D 6.0 26.0 15:20.42 firefox-bin After just 1:05 hrs uptime firefox-bin shows VIRT=RES+SWAP of 535M, and a CPU TIME+ of 15:20. That's high. My 10.04 kubuntu is up over 19 days with only(in comparison) 118.33 on firefox. It was suggested to shut down firefox for testing. However, there have been cases where some firefox process(es) continue running despite the fact that the app was shut down. The usual way would be to 'kill PID(s)', but we may get a cleaner picture faster if you simply reboot, start with a shell running top (let it settle to get at least a 5 Min average), take a snapshot, then start other apps, then firefox with increasing Tabs and demands. We may just learn what everybody is already suspecting -- but knowing is better than guessing. - Horst ________________________________ From: Joseph Weston Morgan <morg...@efn.org> To: Eugene Unix and Gnu/Linux User Group <euglug@euglug.org> Sent: Sat, January 22, 2011 8:14:12 PM Subject: [Eug-lug] slow system Right now the system is running really slow.
