Yes, that's the theory.  The USB2.0 hub that I referred to never
worked under Linux at any speed.  And 2.0 was also backwards
compatible with 1.1.  YMMV

Don't forget that USB3 is backwards compatible with USB2, so even if
something goes wrong with your 3.0 setup, the "big drive" will work
just fine via a 2.0 port. I'm backing up my Macbook Pro (running
Ubuntu) onto a USB3 drive connected via a USB2 hub built into my Dell
monitor, connected to a USB2 hub in my laptop stand, connected to a
USB2 port on the machine. Works fine.
