NASA Science News for May 3, 2001

Last week NASA received a weak signal from Pioneer 10, twice as far
from the Sun as Pluto and speeding toward the constellation Taurus. The
well-traveled spacecraft is currently exploring the outer heliosphere, but
soon it will take on a new job: ambassador to the stars.

Question:  I know its just terrific that we've reestablished contact with
this resilient old bird, but is it conducting any useful science out there in
near-interstellar space?  Or is this just an exercise in looooooong distance
communications (and is that a form of "science" in and of itself?).
