Judging from the positive reaction of the House Subcommittee on Space and
Astronautics during its hearings today on "Life in the Universe", it's just
possible that the decision by a bipartisan pack of dunderheads to cut off
government funding for SETI may be reversed some time in the fairly near
future by another bipartisan coalition:

The testimony included surprisingly detailed descriptions of the current
SETI effort, and NASA's Solar System and extrasolar-planet programs, by
Chris Chyba, Jack Farmer and Ed Weiler -- as well as an initial statement by
Hayden Planetarium director Neil Tyson that might be called "Astrobiology
for Dummies" (or Congressmen, if there's a difference) which included a
witty if somewhat irrelevant discourse on the idiocy of Hollywood's concepts
of aliens:
