I’m back from wrapping up our blueprint project with Ian Walsh from SPACE MODELS INDEX PAGE (http://www.planet3earth.freeserve.co.uk/). The Discovery interior blueprints will be available next month in the Technology section. I’ve also been very busy at work at the same time coordinating the latest news and information for the newsletter and website from "2001" fans all over the world and in some cases, even not from this world. ;-)
I want to thank many of the fans for offering me disk space on their servers to accommodate our multimedia files. As you know from my last newsletter, we’ve hit our disk space quota on our web account and we had to take down all the movies and sound bytes.
Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-112 six-member crew blast off October 8th to deliver the S1 (S-One) Truss to the International Space Station. It was the first time a side-mounted video camera shows the fast-receding coastline as the Orbiter climb toward orbit. Atlantis docked with the ISS 240 miles above central Asia October 9 and on October 10th, two astronauts attached a new 14-ton girder to the international space station using an immense construction crane, then another pair took a spacewalk to wire it up. "During a recent search for some on-line home hardware items, I happened across an interesting product (and idea): At http://musicaldoorbell.com you can buy (for $49.95) a musical doorbell with The Blue Danube as one of the preprogrammed tunes it plays. Unfortunately, it doesn't play 2001's signature theme, Also Sprach Zarathustra-but it does the next best thing... It's programmable.
Small piano-like keys on the unit allow you to add your own tunes (Zarathustra is easy-the unit keys, played in the following order, will play it: E, B, E2, B, A#.) So the next time Avon or Jehovah's Witnesses ring your doorbell, make their day (and yours too!) with a musical salute to 2001."
Dana also reports to the World Tonight about the "Fantastic Voyage: Evolution of Science Fiction":
On Saturday the 28th, The History Channel ran a two-hour documentary called "Fantastic Voyage: Evolution Science Fiction." Early in the viewing two quick shots of interest were seen: The Star Child, and later, a young Arthur C. Clarke (when 1940's writers were mentioned.)
With 25 minutes left to go, one wondered if they were ever going to get to 2001, but then, over three minutes were shown of it (which was generous, considering the vast history they had to show in two hours.) Roger Corman spoke most about it, and praised it to no end.
Shortly after this, when covering the Star Trek convention "boom" from the '70's down to our day, a brief shot of Gunther Anderson was seen in his blue 2001 reproduction spacesuit-complete with ape mask! (See Dennis' Art Gallery section for photos: http://www.2001exhibit.org/arts/anderson.html)
The biggest honor came at the end, when 2001 was the one of the last three shots (it was of Bowman's face, along with NASA animation and some obscure shot from an unidentified movie) to be seen before the credits rolled (not even Star Trek or Star Wars concluded the show!)

I found a very strange science fiction book, "The Visitors" by Clifford D. Simak, published by Del Rey, in 1979. And it deals with black monoliths visiting Earth in the 20th Century. This was BEFORE Clarke decided to write "2010." Visit the Arts section and the artwork influenced by "2001":

Summary about the talk from James Marinaccio:
It was a panel discussion with Dennis Murren, special effects guru, Peter Hyams, director of 2010, Syd Mead and a guest from 2001. There were no handouts or anything. It was about 40 minutes and they spoke and then took a couple of audience questions. Not too much discussion on Kubrick, but some. Mead just talked about himself. Hyams kept lumping Kubrick in with other "greats" like Speilberg and Cameron. Personally, given the title, I didn’t think there was enough balance talking about the film 2001 or Kubrick or either true significance, instead they talked more about themselves and modern film and effects and such. Maybe 35% of it was about 2001 ASO and Kubrick.
