Hi Rüdiger Well done.
About the driving license analogy. Is there such a big difference to the way it
is handled now? Every car also has to go through TÜV so it is not so different
to the lab certificates we have right now. But obiously the regulations did not
foresee the diffusion of technology. And needs to acknowledge this more in the
future.
I saw all kinds of reactions to the German statement. From "Germany is a
repressive authoritarian state" to "nothing new under the sun". The debate is
certainly good to better understand and account for all things DIYBio, pulling
biotech not only out of institutonal labs but also out of hackerspaces.

hey all,
attached is the Interview i gave on the BVL comment to Der
Spiegel magazine. It is published today in print.
further i'd like to point out that questions on crispr and
regulation will be subject of my upcoming crispr.kitchen, for
which we will also prepare video and text material for the public
discussion.

Accessible Bio Companies Back Up DIY Kits
Hi folks,
Great to
see some good response. Here is some
more food for thought with the
potential for lively exchange of
views and opinions.
You might
have seen the Warning by the German
government institution to be careful
when using DIYBio kits. The German
„Bundesamt für Verbraucherschutz"
has issued a warning for people who
think about purchasing any of the
available DIY kits for doing more
than analytics, say synthetic stuff.
In Make Magazine Germany they
discuss who would be affected and
several well known start-ups were
mentioned.

article

Today, two
of the affected US “Accessible Bio”
companies, Amino and Biorealize,
have issued a statement responding
to the warning, titled
Accessible
Bio Companies Back Up the
Importance of “Criminal” DIY Kits
for the Future of Science
