General Motors Awards Electric Car To Chattanooga
posted August 15, 2002
Thanks to its growing reputation as a hub of clean-fuel
technologies, Chattanooga has been named the recipient of an
EV1 electric car by General Motors.
The car will be presented Tuesday at 10 a.m. to the Electric
Vehicle Information Center, where it will become a static
display in the Centers collection of exhibits.
The Center is one of 12 organizations nationwide to receive
an EV1 in this round of GM Donation Program awards. It joins
a highly select group of winners, including: the Smithsonian
Institution in Washington, D.C.; Brigham Young University in
Provo, Utah; the University of Cincinnati; the Cleveland
Institute of Art; the Detroit Science Center; Henry Ford
Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan; Mid-Del
Technology Center in Midwest City, Oklahoma; Mott Community
College in Flint, Michigan; Nethercutt Collection and Museum
in Sylmar, California; Oldsmobile/GM Heritage Center in
Lansing, Michigan; and Petersen Automotive Museum in Los
Angeles.
Chattanoogas Electric Vehicle Information Center, located
inside Shuttle Park South, is the only public access museum
in the United States dedicated to disseminating information
about electric cars and buses. Managed by the Chattanooga
Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA), the Center
attracts more than 30,000 visitors each year and frequently
hosts field trips for elementary and high school students.
The green EV1 car will join the Centers other interactive
and learning displays, including a battery-powered 1979 VW
Rabbit, an electric police bike, a battery charging station,
a Capstone turbine, fuel cell and solar displays, learning
videos, and a Kids Corner with an electric toy car.
We will be proud to house and display this unique electric
car, said Tom Dugan of CARTA. Its a forerunner of the
environmentally friendly hybrid [...] cars [...].
"Were excited to be selected along with such organizations
as the Smithsonian.
>From 1997 through 1999, General Motors leased hundreds of
its sporty, zero-emission EV1 cars to environmental and
technology enthusiasts in California and Arizona. Although
no longer manufacturing the EV1, GM is applying lessons
learned from the EV1 project to develop [future] car
technology.
Jill Banaszynski, with GMs Advanced Technology Vehicles
program, notified Chattanooga of the award. Lewis Dale, GMs
director of public policy, recently visited the Electric
Vehicle Information Center and toured Chattanoogas living
laboratory of electric bus technology.
The EV1 will arrive at the Electric Vehicle Information
Center at 9 a.m. on August 20, and a press conference will
follow at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend.
The Center is located downtown at 1398 Market Street,
opposite the Chattanooga Choo-Choo Hotel and Convention
Center.

Institute (423) 622-3884.
