Remember Chuck, VW has quite a bit of exeriance with mounting only the transaxle - 60 plus years of VW Beetles and still in production. The Rabbit transaxle is mounted quite similarly to the Beetle (both sides of the bellhousing and far end). Also, *I've* never seen a Rabbit without an engine mount, its just something noted a couple of times (while describing several different dissasembly processes) in the Bently manual for Rabbits. That said, my motor adapter plate is only about 1/2 inch below my lower controller mounting bracket. They have not collided up to about 100ft/lbs of torque (about 600 motor amps with a Presto MTC).
