So, the motor will not get up to full speed anymore.
There could be
a huge number of causes.  First, since the Currie is a
brushless motor,
its speed is probably governed by a quartz crystal.

Most of the cheap controls have a ceramic resonator.

Another couple of possibilities.

1) Check the throttle pot to make sure you have full range, 0-5k
or whatever the original range was.

2) If the motor got really hot, there's a possibility of partial demag
of the rotor.  Although the circuit should of been designed to
protect from this using a combination of the thermistor for
over-temperature
and hardware current limit.
If the motor was partially demagnetized it will still work, but it is less
efficient, won't reach top speed and will overheat faster.
