MIT scientists make battery to power electric car
Scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in
Cambridge have developed a battery, similar to those in cell
phones, to use as an alternative to nickel-metal hydride
cells that power electric cars, the Associated Press
reported.
The lithium-ion batteries would share traits with those used
in wireless telephones, and will be much bigger, AP
reported, citing Yet- Ming Chiang, one of the authors of the
research, which appeared Sunday in the electronic version of
Nature Materials. Sony Corp. introduced lithium-ion
batteries in 1991, and they have been used in consumer
electronics like laptop computers, digital cameras and
mobile phones, AP said.
Scientists have been searching for a way to avoid the danger
of overheating that is possible in larger lithium-ion
batteries, AP said.
