As do the OEM's, trying to sense the customer's expectations, current and future regulatory issues, styling and trends. They've been doing it for a century now. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind here, just presenting some ideas and opinions contrary to those that spawned this thread. You will encounter more out there that think like me, scary as it sounds. If you can convince me that indeed you're on the right path, you'll be able to convince anyone, and more importanty, those that actually have the power to make changes.
