An alternative to oil dependence Nimh - nickel-metal hydride
battery The Alternative Era By Lou Ann Hammond

We didn’t get out of the stoneage because we were out of stones.
We don’t have to be out of oil to stop the dependence. It’s time
to move on. This is the beginning of alternatives for oil. There
will be more alternatives and in 10-20 years we will probably see
hydrogen become mass produced. Right now, it is hybrids.

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) do not need to be plugged in,
they run on two energy sources. Currently, the most familiar is
an internal combustion engine and a battery. HEVs are touted as
being two to three times as fuel efficient as an ordinary
internal combustion engine. The engine generates electricity to
charge the batteries. Regenerative braking is when the brakes are
applied in a vehicle with this system; the heat generated is
captured as energy and stored in batteries. Regenerative braking,
is why you don’t have to plug in. Hybrids seem to be the stop-gap
between internal combustion engines and hydrogen. Most experts
agree that hydrogen is at least ten years, if not more, away from
production.

Below is the list of which hybrids are available now and what is
to come. If you are looking for a vehicle that is the cleanest,
look for a hybrid that is AT-PZEV. AT-PZEV stands for Advanced
Technology Partial Zero Emission Vehicle. It is the most
stringent requirement for clean air in the nation and required in
California, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts and New York.

This mandate for cleaner emissions began in California, where
almost 1 month out of the year is a spare the air day. There are
about twenty PZEV vehicles. To meet the PZEV requirements a
vehicle must have near-zero evaporative emissions and the
emissions equipment on the car must be warrantied for 15
years/150,000 miles. The Ford Focus is PZEV rated and it is an
internal combustion engine. To be rated the highest pedestal
honor, AT-PZEV, the vehicle must have the PZEV rating and use an
alternative fuel, electric drive or some other advanced
technology device. The Ford Focus cannot become AT-PZEV unless it
changes technologies

All hybrids can be AT-PZEV, but some are not. According to Mike
Whelan, Subaru Corporation, Subaru raised its price on the
Outback and Legacy PZEV by $200. That figure jives with most
Manufacturers, so if you have cash and want to help the
environment look for the AT-PZEV label.

Subaru hasn’t made a hybrid yet, but does have a concept car,
codenamed B9SC. The hybrid system in the Subaru B9 SC works on a
lithium ion battery and is ideally suited to work with the
brand’s existing Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive systems. They are
looking for synergies with their partner, General Motors.

The world’s only manufacturer of rotary engines, Mazda is looking
towards hydrogen for its renesis engine. It takes away some
horsepower, leaving it with 120, but look for that to change.

Mike Michels, Corporate Manager for Toyota Motor Sales explains,
"The Toyota Prius was introduced in 1999. It is a full hybrid.
This means, that it is essentially an electric vehicle with
gasoline assist as needed. This differs greatly from other
systems, such as the mild hybrid Honda Civic and Insight, which
are essentially conventional gasoline vehicles with occasional
electric motor assist as needed.

The advantages of a full hybrid system are greater efficiency,
lower emissions (by a factor of 10) and smoother operation. The
electric motor drives the wheels directly, without need for
transmission shifts. The new Prius is able to drive on purely
electric power for a large portion of its total operating time,
and of course the gasoline powertrain shuts down entirely when
coasting, braking at a stop." The Prius is an AT-PZEV.

Toyota will bring to market Subarus concept hybrid next year the
Highlander and the Lexus RX330.

Honda Motor Corporation, according to Juan Avila, has three
hybrids; the Honda Insight, a two-seater with a 1.0-liter,
three-cylinder engine that produces 66 horsepower and a combined
79 horsepower, a Honda Civic with a 1.3-liter, 4-cylinder that
produces a combined 93 horsepower and the Honda Accord.

In addition, 2004 Civic Hybrids sold in Vermont, Maine,
Massachusetts and New York will meet the same stringent Advanced
Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) standards as
models sold in California, making the Civic Hybrid the first
AT-PZEV vehicle sold outside of California. The flagship sedan,
the Accord, may have too much performance to be certified as a
PZEV, Honda doesn’t know yet, but it will still have great mpg at
30/38mpg with 255 horsepower.

There have been editorials in newspapers lately on how the
American Manufacturers are lagging behind in hybrids and
alternative fuels. Years ago the same claim was made of some of
the brick and mortar groups that didn’t get on the internet right
away. Their justification was they wanted to make sure it was
going to last before they put their money into a system that
could last as long as the 8-track. Large corporations are like
big barges in the ocean. They take awhile to turn around, but
once they do...

Chrysler’s Cole Quinnell, Manager Engineering for Chrysler Group,
told of the 2005 model Dodge RAM HEV that is a diesel hybrid.
Besides being a diesel and a hybrid it has an electric generator
on board, enough of a generator to power 4 homes. Quinnell points
to the black out in the Northeast last year as an example of its
use.

Susan Krusel, Public Affairs Manager for trucks and SUVs, Ford
Corporation is excited to have the Escape ready for market.
"Unlike other hybrids on the road, the Ford Escape Hybrid is a
no-compromise hybrid SUV, which will deliver between 29-31hwy and
35-40city mpg with all of the attributes of the base Escape. The
Escape Hybrid is a full hybrid able to run on either its gasoline
engine and/or its electric motor depending on which will deliver
the most efficient fuel performance. The Escape will come in both
FWD and 4WD configurations and will deliver acceleration similar
to a V6 engine with an efficient I4, as well as maintain the
cargo capacity of the Escape. The Escape Hybrid will deliver
AT-PZEV emissions performance all below $27,000.

California native, Al Kammerer, Executive Director, SUV and
Body-on-frame-vehicles, Ford Motor Corporation feels proud to be
bringing the first SUV hybrid to California. "The Escape is the
number one selling SUV in its segment. California is the most
environmentally conscious. That Ford is making the Escape a
hybrid says just how much Bill Ford believes in the
environment."

According to Kammerer there are many benefits to Hybrid Electric
Vehicles;

Reduces emissions by increasing average engine efficiency.

Engine shuts down, when the vehicle is stopped.

Regenerative brakes recapture energy, to recharge the battery.

Improved fuel economy stretches a tank of gas further, saves you
money, and helps you conserve our limited petroleum resources.

Driving performance is optimized because both the gas engine and
electric motor are working for you.

No battery plug-ins required.

You get all the conveniences of conventional vehicles: spacious
seating, storage room, creature comforts, and extended driving
range.

Our future Ford Escape HEV will be delivered, sold, and serviced
at your local Ford Dealer.

The Mercury Mariner, an AT-PZEV hybrid, will be announced in 2006
as a 2007 model. After that Ford is planning a midsize sedan
hybrid.

Ford just donated twelve Escapes

Toyota Prius and Honda Insight to the National Parks Foundation.
The SUVs will be located in Washington D.C., California,
Colorado, Massachusetts and New York.

Ford has also designed a hydrogen HEV sedan concept, codename,
H2RV, Hydrogen hybrid research vehicle with a modified internal
combustion engine.

Nissan is making 100,000 units, over five years, of its flagship
sedan, the Altima, into a hybrid AT-PZEV available in 2006. It
will still offer the classic internal combustion engine Altima.
According to Tadao Takahashi, Executive Vice President and member
of the Nissan Board and Renault-Nissan Alliance board, Nissan has
signed an agreement with Toyota to use their hybrid components.
Nissan will develop the engine.

General Motors has used every letter in the alphabet when in
comes to acronyms for alternative related vehicles. The ICE is
optimized with the DOD, the AHSII is on an SUV and the E85FFV is
in more than 1,000,000 vehicles. All these acronyms mean that GM
has figured out that hybrids can be amortized in a timely fashion
to be profitable.

For model year 2005 General Motors will be bringing out (Super
Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) SULEV pickups, Chevy Silverado and
GMC Sierra. 2008 will see the Advanced Hybrid System II (AHSII)
AT-PZEV Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon.

General Motors has gone a busload further. No longer does one get
to see the puff of diesel smoke from 200 buses in Seattle WA. The
40-foot hybrid bus features the Allison Electric Drive system,
one of the first "roadworthy" commercial parallel hybrid systems.
If GM replaced 13,000 transit buses in America’s nine largest
cities with GM Hybrid transit buses those 13,000 buses would save
more fuel each year than 500,000 small hybrid vehicles.

According to the Manufacturers, the hybrid battery is designed to
last for the lifetime of the vehicle, somewhere around 150,000
miles. The battery is warranted between eight and ten years,
depending on the carmaker. Hybrids use NiMH batteries, which are
nickel-metal hydride batteries. For a new battery not under any
warranty, costs can range from $3,000 to $8,000.

Honda has a group recycle their batteries, Ford and General
Motors both work with U.S. cars recycling program. Terry Cullum,
director of environment and energy at General Motors,
(affectionately known as "The end of Life Man") and Scott Staley,
Chief Engineer at Ford agree that batteries are recyclable.
According to Staley, "the nickel in the hybrid battery is the
nickel used in steel processing." Cullum thinks, "there will be
an infrastructure that will develop soon because of the inherent
value in the battery. Johnson Controls has a keen interest in
getting the batteries back. The recycling process is analogous to
the current lead acid battery, just with different technologies
and different materials."

In a letter in the Automotive News, June 7, 2004, Robert Stempel,
CEO of Energy Conversion Devices wrote to the Editor, "As the
inventor of the Ovonic Nickel Metal Hybrid Battery, Energy
Conversion can assure your readers that nickel metal bydride
batteries are environmentally friendly and totally recyclable.
The environmental issues were part of the initial design
considerations when the battery was being developed in the early
1980s."

What about cost? If we take the Ford Escape and the Ford Escape
Hybrid, with all else being equal except mpg and price, the
difference over 5 years would total $3,420. Take away $1,500 for
federal tax credit and you’re left with a deficit of $1,920. The
difference in gas savings for the hybrid is $628. It would take
three years to equal the price of an internal combustion engine
cost.

But you would breath easier knowing you were part of the
alternative era. Hey; that thang got a generator in it? *Always

Team eyes larger lithium batteries
The Asahi Shimbun

A Keio University research team has joined with major businesses
to develop large-capacity lithium-ion batteries suitable for mass
production, hoping to lower their prices to one-twentieth the
current levels.

The two-year project calls for a research budget of 500 million
yen, to be covered by the companies, which include KDDI Corp.,
Daiwa House Industry Co. and Takenaka Corp.

The university and businesses will share any patents stemming
from the project.

The research team, part of the private university's Electric
Vehicle Laboratory (EVL), will set out to produce standardized
lithium-ion batteries with large capacities designed for use in
electric vehicles and buildings.

Most of the products currently on the market have capacities
applicable for use in smaller devices such as cellphones and
personal computers.

The high cost of obtaining lithium-ion batteries led the EVL
researchers to initiate the project.

Because high-powered batteries have yet to find broad
application, their production is limited and their prices remain
high. Batteries used to run a single electric car, for example,
cost about 20 million yen, the sources said.

The project team is comprised of about a dozen researchers, who
will soon be joined by workers dispatched from the private-sector
firms.

The researchers are considering plans to develop a battery about
the size of a lunchbox so that dozens or even hundreds of them
can be connected for specific needs.

The research will focus on ways to control the electricity
generated by each battery for the most efficient use, the sources
said.

Other companies involved in the project include battery maker GS
Yuasa Corp., power generator maker Eneserve Corp., Dai Nippon
Printing Co., Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Kokuyo Co.

Project leader Hiroichi Yoshida says the new battery will produce
major benefits.

``This is a technology that will promote the use of electric
vehicles, but that's not all,'' said the professor at Keio's
Graduate School of Media and Governance. ``It also promotes, for
example, efficient use of electricity from wind power generators
and surplus electricity at night, which in turn will help stem
global warming.''(IHT/Asahi: October 20,2004) (10/20)

--- {EVangel}
http://www.bikebiz.co.uk/daily-news/article.php?id=4774 Wednesday
13th October 2004 Sakura to produce Europe's first
lithium-powered electric bike

The London-based battery company will launch the alu-framed bike
in spring next year. It's claimed the bike will weigh in at 23
kilos, at least 17 kilos lighter than existing lead-acid powered
electric bikes. Laptops and the like are powered by
lithium-batteries.

Sakura Battery Company has developed its own Advanced Lithium
Battery System (ALBS).

Company director Dan Hornby said:

Whilst the sale of electric bikes has been growing rapidly over
last few years, sales have been held back by the sheer weight of
the batteries needed to get an acceptable range. We have been
working to solve this problem for more than two years.

"The Lithium battery technology was fairly easy; most laptops use
similar batteries. The battery management system and the
electronic controller were the difficult parts to crack. Unlike
the normal lead acid battery pack in a standard electric bike,
which contains two or three 12 volt batteries, the ALBS system
has between seven and ten 3.7 volt batteries. Each battery in the
system has to be charged individually, they also need individual
monitoring during discharge. This makes for some very complex
control circuits."

Lithium batteries means much lower weights for bikes, increased
range and a longer life for the battery pack.

Targeted to sell at around £900, Sakura's ALBS-powered bike will
compete head on with top of the range offerings from other
manufacturers using heavy steel frames and lead acid batteries.

Hornby offers an upgrade path: "Electric bikes with existing lead
acid battery packs can be replaced with ALBS with the proviso
that the system works in a different voltage to lead acid
batteries, the range advantage of a bike purpose built to take
the ALBS system will be lost."

This is a here and now product and we see it as a breakthrough
for the electric vehicle market. Production fuel cell technology
remains years away and as more and more manufactures follow our
lead volumes will increase, it will be possible to reduce costs,
bring prices down, and make ALBS the industry standard.”

Chevrolet Malibu will go hybrid in 2007
Sedan's gas engine gets electric assist
Mileage boost of 10 per cent seen

General Motors has confirmed that it will begin building a
gasoline-electric hybrid version of the Chevrolet Malibu sedan at
its Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kan., in 2007.

Designated as a 2008 model, it is expected to employ a
belt-alternator-starter (BAS) system that adds electric-motor
assist to GM's Ecotec four-cylinder engine.

A relatively simple system, compared to hybrids now on the
market, it replaces the conventional alternator with a combined
alternator/starter and adds a 36-volt storage battery.

Combined with an automatic start-stop system, which shuts off the
engine whenever the car stops, the hybrid set-up will have the
potential to reduce fuel consumption by some 10 per cent, the
automaker says.

Supplier Team Selected by `HTUF' Utility Fleets for National
Deployment of Advanced Hybrid Trucks

KALAMAZOO, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)---- Eaton and International
Truck and Engine Will Build 20-Plus Medium-Duty Hybrid Trucks for
13 Utilities in Nation's Largest Hybrid Launch

Utility and state truck fleets working together in WestStart's
Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF) program have selected the
supplier team of Eaton Corporation and International Truck and
Engine Corporation to build more than 20 advanced, pre-production
hybrid-electric work trucks for national deployment and
assessment.

The trucks promise to improve fuel economy an impressive 40-60%,
provide engine-off work site operation, reduce maintenance costs
and further cut emissions from this class of truck. Coupled to
that, the trucks offer a "dual use" benefit that supports both
commercial truck needs and emerging military needs for efficient
drivelines.

The deployment represents the largest effort to date in the U.S.
and shows the growing momentum toward advanced, fuel-saving
hybrid technology in medium and heavy-duty work trucks. The
selection announcement comes during the national meeting of HTUF
in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

"This project takes hybrid truck systems to the next level of
commercialization," said John Boesel, President and CEO of
WestStart-CALSTART, which operates the Hybrid Truck Users Forum
program in a partnership with the U.S. Army's National Automotive
Center (NAC). "These are not prototype trucks. They are the early
production versions of what we expect will be commercially
available trucks in the next two to four years."

The national Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF) is a joint program
between WestStart-CALSTART and the NAC to speed the
commercialization of hybrid drivelines that could be used in both
military and commercial vehicles. The HTUF program enjoys the
participation of over 50 fleets representing roughly one million
trucks. HTUF has worked with fleets and suppliers to identify the
best, first market segments for hybrid trucks and has organized
fleet Working Groups around those applications. The best uses are
generally for urban work trucks, especially those with heavy
stop-and-go or urban driving, and also those with high engine
idling times.

HTUF's Utility Working Group developed performance specifications
for a hybrid "bucket" or trouble service truck, including a 50%
increase in fuel economy, reliability equal to today, the ability
to perform repair work with the engine shut down and the ability
to generate electricity for emergency and other use. Twelve core
fleets committed to purchase pre-production trucks that met these
requirements. A nationwide request for proposals was sent to
truck makers and suppliers, leading to a detailed selection
process of the finalists that ended with the selection of the
Eaton and International team.

"These trucks make sense because the users themselves developed
the requirements," said George Survant, director of fleet
services for Florida Power and Light Company and chair of the
HTUF Utility Working Group. "We spent considerable time jointly
assessing what kind of performance, fuel economy gains and new
capabilities will make a business case for our operations. If
these trucks now prove out these capabilities and costs, we
fleets are prepared to start buying them in the coming years as
our replacement vehicle."

HTUF is a process to speed commercialization, not a research
program. Therefore, participating fleets will pay for the base
trucks and agree to place them into operation for assessment.
Fleets themselves will pay more than $3.5 million; HTUF will
assist them by providing additional funding to help buy-down the
cost of the advanced drivelines. Unlike development programs,
this is a pre-production deployment of next generation trucks
that will be produced on International's assembly line.

The main fleets committed to the deployment purchase beyond
Florida Power & Light Company include: Alabama Power; American
Electric Power; Baltimore Gas & Electric; Duke Energy; Entergy;
Georgia Power; Hydro Quebec; Missouri Department of
Transportation; Pacific Gas & Electric Company; Pepco; Southern
California Edison; and TXU Electric Delivery.

WestStart-CALSTART has been playing a national role as
coordinator and facilitator of efforts to advance hybrid
technology in the trucking industry. As with hybrid passenger
cars, hybrid technology can significantly improve fuel economy
and reduce harmful emissions from the nation's medium- and
heavy-duty trucks. However, truck hybrids are potentially
emerging as a U.S.-led technology: there are already more than 10
different leading U.S. manufacturers of heavy-duty hybrid
propulsion systems.

The program also directly supports the Army's goal of developing
future trucks that will be more energy efficient, require fewer
support logistics and be capable of providing remote power
generation. These HTUF trucks are very similar in size and
driveline performance to the most common class of Army support
vehicles, giving the Army valuable early data on performance and
acceptance.

"For the Army to get the future truck capabilities we need, at
the costs we want, there needs to be commercial production
volumes and a strong U.S. commercial industry and technology base
to make them," notes Dennis Wend, executive director of the NAC.
"We support HTUF because it helps bring together commercial and
military truck efforts."

WestStart-CALSTART is the nation's leading advanced
transportation technology industry organization working to
support and accelerate the growth of companies developing clean
and energy efficient transportation technologies. Over 115
companies and agencies are WestStart-CALSTART participating
organizations. Its California operating division does business as
CALSTART. For more information on this non-profit organization,

Saft Group to Open New Manufacturing Plant in China
Saft, Which is Already Located in 23 Countries, is to Reinforce
Its International Presence With the Opening of a New Plant in
China, to Meet Increasing Local Demand

PARIS, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Saft, the world leader in
specialized batteries for industrial and defense applications,
announces that it is to invest in a new manufacturing facility in
China.

The new plant, which is additional capacity for the group, will
manufacture and assemble two key battery technologies. The first
is primary lithium batteries, which are used in electricity
meters in China today, and for which the market is growing
rapidly. There is also a rapidly developing market for batteries
for water and gas meters. Saft estimates that the Chinese market
is growing at approximately 20% per annum.

The second market with fast growth in China for Saft is rail,
with projects currently on-going for several cities. These
applications use Saft's nickel-cadmium batteries, for reasons of
reliability, safety and robustness. This investment is to reply
to increasing demand from local rail manufacturers to modernize
their rolling stock and increase the presence of added-value
components.

The initial investment will be euro 5 Million and Saft sees huge
potential in the Chinese market for specialized batteries. The
group is continuing to expand and invest worldwide in its primary
lithium technologies for industrial applications, one of the main
areas currently driving the group's growth.

Saft CEO, John Searle, commented: "Opening this new manufacturing
plant in China is a logical step for Saft. We have shipped more
than 20 million cells to China over the last three years and
demand is growing there for high added value products such as
ours. It is our strategy to manufacture as close to our customers
as we can in order to offer them the best possible service."

Manufacturing will begin in early 2006 with an initial 150
employees.

This strategic decision confirms Saft's continued growth in the
industrial markets it serves.

About Saft
The Saft group is a global multi-technology battery specialist
with a leadership position in its chosen markets. A newly
independent company, Saft is No.1 in the world for the

EVLN(Union Pacific Low-Emission Green Goat Locomotives)
[The Internet Electric Vehicle List News. For Public EV
informational purposes. Contact publication for reprint rights.]
--- {EVangel}
OMAHA, Neb., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Pacific Railroad has
expanded its extensive air emission reduction program by
acquiring two types of new high-tech locomotives for switching in
rail yards.

Union Pacific has ordered a prototype diesel "truck-engine"
switch (TES) locomotive and has leased a newer version of a
hybrid electric locomotive known as the "Green Goat." The
railroad was the first to test the original Green Goat hybrid in
Roseville, Calif., two years ago.

"Union Pacific has been a leader in pursuing new technology to
reduce diesel air emissions," said Bob Grimaila, UP senior
assistant vice president- safety, environment and security.
"These locomotives will continue to advance our fleet as the most
environmentally friendly on the continent."

Both switching locomotives are expected to reduce nitrous oxides
(NOx) and particulate matter by approximately 70 to 90 percent.

The TES will be certified under the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency "Tier 2" standards that become effective January 1, 2005.
Tier 2 certified locomotives have NOx emissions that are 67
percent lower than those of locomotives manufactured prior to
1973.

In the past five years, 35 percent of Union Pacific's locomotive
fleet has been certified under EPA Tier 0 standards (44 percent
less than pre-1973 NOx emission levels) and Tier 1 standards (56
percent less than pre-1973 NOx emission levels). This percentage
makes Union Pacific's locomotive fleet the "greenest" in the
industry.

The TES will be used in medium- to heavy-duty switching
operations in and around rail yards where railcars are collected
and sorted for trains. It will use two state-of-the-art diesel
engines developed for large, over-the-road trucks.

Still, for normal heavy-tonnage freight trains operating long
distances between cities, locomotives using conventional
3,000-4,400 horsepower diesel engines emit only one-third as much
NOx compared to over-the-road diesel trucks when measured in
emissions per gross ton-mile.

The truck-engine diesels will power a generator in the same
manner as a conventional locomotive and will provide electricity
to run the traction motors that turn the wheels. National
Railway Equipment Company, based in Dixmoor, Ill., is developing
the truck-engine locomotive.

Union Pacific's other acquisition -- the newer hybrid electric
Green Goat locomotive -- uses batteries to power its electric
traction motors. A small 300-horsepower diesel engine-driven
generator recharges the batteries as necessary.

Designed for light-to-medium switching, the hybrid electric
locomotive is expected to achieve fuel savings of up to 80
percent.

Railpower Technologies, Inc., based in Vancouver, British
Columbia, will manufacture the Green Goat. "Goat" is a
traditional railroad nickname for switching locomotives.

Union Pacific Corporation owns one of America's leading
transportation companies. Its principal operating company, Union
Pacific Railroad, is the largest railroad in North America,
covering 23 states across the western two-thirds of the United
States. A strong focus on quality and a strategically
advantageous route structure enable the company to serve
customers in critical and fast growing markets. It is a leading
carrier of low-sulfur coal used in electrical power generation
and has broad coverage of the large chemical-producing areas
along the Gulf Coast. With competitive long-haul routes between
all major West Coast ports and eastern gateways, and as the only
railroad to serve all six major gateways to Mexico, Union Pacific
has the premier rail franchise in North America.
