Thanks Bob. If I get there, I'll definitely look you up. I used to own an
ICE '91 teal green Civic hatchback. I loved that car. Sold it to the
neighbor kid for $4k back in '02. He tricked it out with a new computer,
twin turbos, Nitric, phat exhaust, 16" rims and a suspension overhaul. It
ended up with about 220hp. What a pocket rocket.

Hi,
With the "Choice" link10, how do you accomodate a 1000 amp reading? Do
you just use a 100mv 1000 amp shunt and it works, or does there need to
be a software upgrade? If there does need to be a software upgrade, how
do you do it and where do you get the software? I haven't been able to
find much on Google.
I already have a 1000 amp, 50mv shunt. Anyway to make it work with the
e-meter?
One last question: does the shunt *have* to be at traction pack ground?
It will get it's millivolt drop anywhere in the pack, but the e-meter
expects it to be at ground, right? It would sure work better in my
system if it didn't have to be at ground.
Thanks a lot,
Ryan

Last resort (if the mounting is not the problem) may be to bolt the
electric motor AND 320 transmission into the 318, even if the drive
shafts are different, then carefully measure the two shafts, cut each in
half and weld one new shaft, converting from 320 transmission to the 318
differential. Anybody that has done that before?
Works as a cost effective solution. If you change adapter plates it's 600
bucks. I'd be suprised if they didn't just bolt in. LR.......

Subject: BMW EV conversion question
Hi list,
a challenge for you but not after a short intro of myself, as
this is my first post to the list:
I am originally Dutch, moved to Sunnyvale, CA in 2003 because
of work and have been driving a Prius as the closest to an EV that
I could lay my hands on and that allowed both range and a family.
In the Netherlands I have constructed a 3,000 Watt PV system on the
roof of the house that I sold when moving.
Usually I ride a bicycle to work, but my office is moving to San Jose
so the commute will be 10 miles - still possible by bike but to regain
some of the time as well as to cater to an old dream, I like to go the
route of using an EV (my house is already an EV emergency charging site,
so why not make this a permanent charging site)
(I am also delighted to avoid starting any ICE for short trips around
town when doing errands, pick up people for church and so on.)
Anyway - I found a '91 BMW 318i with blown engine and good body and
after some browsing discovered a recently crashed '83 320is EV with
GE motor and adapterplate.
Both cars were built with 1.8i 4 cylinder motors, but the transmissions
appear to have different part nrs and drive shaft length and coupling
is likely different. (although both are manual 5-gear)
Now the main question:
Anybody know if the 320is adapter will fit the 318i transmission?
I am trying to avoid hauling two cars to my place only to end up with
two incompatible halves.
Sorry to ask all the questions that may have been answered before, hope
any of you can tell me if I am on the right path to a functioning and fun
to drive EV.
I plan to use around 192V on the 9" GE motor which is specified for 99.4V
and 201A (if I read the plate right) with max 23hp but at almost double
voltage it should peak close to 100hp.
I still need to figure out which controller to use/build/rebuild.
(I prefer second-hand over new as a way of life: my bicycle is second
hand,
my Prius is a salvage, most furniture is second hand, I buy used books at
Amazon and so on.)
(Batteries will likely be new, unless someone has a good pointer for 32x
6V or 16 x 12V batteries with more than 100Ah (at 1hr rate) and preferably
well below a max of 1500 lb.)
Thanks in advance!

I mention this because I don't want people losing
emails.
1st: Just don't use attachments to the list as
required (I know the last one was a mistake). Upload
the picture somewhere and provide a link or offer to
email direct to people who want to see it.
2nd. For those who want to use the limit feature where
available 10k limit is too low. There were half a
dozen messages that exceeded that on the list
yesterday so you'd lose those. I'd hate for anyone to
miss one of John Waylands or others inpiring EV Tales
or one of the news posts from Bruce. Also the programs
I have seen you can only limit this by each email
account you have so it would affect all incomeing
mail. Not just say received from [email protected]
limit to 20k.

California has just shot themselves in the foot by not allowing people
with electric vehicles to charge them at home plugging into their

the "inrush" current in many cases would be too great and could result in
fires and wiring problems in most situations.

There may be a bit of confusion on the bike lane legality:
[Vehicle Code (VC) 406(a) defines a motorized bicycle, commonly called a
moped,
as a two- or three-wheeled vehicle which can be temporarily propelled by
pedals
or by an electric motor. An automatic transmission connects the wheels to
an
engine which produces less than 2 gross brake horsepower. It has a top
speed of
30 miles per hour on level ground.
A motorized bicycle is also defined (VC 406[b]) as a device which has
fully
operative pedals for human propulsion and has an electric motor with an
output
of not more than 1,000 watts and cannot be driven at a speed of more than
20
mph on level ground. The motorized bicycle cannot go faster than 20 mph
even if
assisted by human power. These vehicles must operate so the electric motor
is
disengaged when the brakes are applied or when the starter switch or
mechanism
is released. A motorized bicycle may not be driven on a freeway, bicycle
path
or trail, equestrian trail, or hiking or recreation trail unless the path
or
trail is on, or next to, a roadway or permission to use the trail or
roadway is
granted by local ordinance. A motorized bicycle may be driven in a bicycle
lane
on a roadway at a reasonable speed and with special care for bicyclists
using
the lane.]
It appears riding a moped (VC 406[a]) in the bicycle lane is NOT legal,

speed) in
the bike lane is.

Hello to All,

Jeff's story reminded me of a similar one that Bill posted, after he visited me

the quad 8 subwoofer array. Shortly after his mind altering Pacific NW visit,

Geesh, all those mods and 'only' 220 hp? The Hondas around here get 400+ hp
with just one

This past weekend, I was bush-hogging the field at my farm with my 1956
Allis Chalmers WD-45 when the engine died.
Nothing I did made the @#$%^&* thing run. Undaunted, I hooked up my I-5
to the front of the tractor and had one friend drive the I-5 while
another steered the tractor.
The ET spun out big time, but was too light to pull the Orange Monster
(according to the factory specs she weighs 4600 lbs "dry" and had a 700+
pound drag bush hog behind her.)
I put my sholder to the wheel of the tractor and was amazed as it
started to move with almost no effort. The ET could pull it no problem,
it was the lack of traction that was the killer.
After that little shove the ET towed the tractor all the way to the barn
(about a 1/4 mile) across uncut grass and weeds.
The neighbors looked dumbfounded as this little Orange lawn mower towed
the massive beast back for repairs. I would have killed to have my
camera.
You just gotta love EV's.

Wait a minute, in your quote below, you actually wrote (as I cut and paste from
your section below):
"A motorized bicycle may be driven in a bicycle lane
on a roadway at a reasonable speed and with special care for bicyclists using
the lane."
And then you conclude that riding a moped (a.k.a a motorized bicycle as per
section 406 which you also quoted) in the bike lane is NOT legal. I'll take
the DMV code you quoted over your personal analysis, in this case. From the
vehicle code, it is definitely legal to ride a moped/motorized bicycle in the
bike lane.
Perhaps you are confusing bike lanes with bike paths, their off-the-roadway
cousins.

Jenn, read the motorized bicycle section closer. The law clearly states
"motorized bicycle cannot go faster than 20 mph" and "A motorized bicycle
may be driven in a bicycle lane on a roadway...". If your moped "can" go
faster than 20mph, it is **not** a motorized bicycle.

Judging by the amount of fan mail I received either the tide is turning or
it just had to do with the time slot right after the most popular show on

However, if someone were to somehow get into your

I would recommend that those who would like a copy get it right from The
Discovery Channel. It's not that expensive
and it shows the producers that there is an interest.
Unfortunately a search on TDC doesn't reveal a way to get a copy from
them. Perhaps one of "the speed-hungry,

I agree, 'Sucking Amps' was a great view last night. Really enjoyable to
see all the EV guys that I've been buying from/talking with. And the
drama!? Rod told the camera that if it became necessary he knew some fellow
Amp Heads who might be able to come and help. Well who walked in? It was
great!
Regarding availability of the segment through Discovery- Sorry, nada.
We can't get it through them. If anyone knows how I can access it, please
let me know.

Tim, people can comment on the show by either calling Discovery at
1-800-889-9950 and ask for viewer relations or go to
http://extweb.discovery.com/viewerrelations and fill out their form in order
to make your comments.
Judging by the amount of fan mail I received either the tide is turning or
it just had to do with the time slot right after the most popular show on
cable TV, not just the Discovery Channel.

Just hook it up. The E-Meter expects 50mV full-scale from the shunt,
and will display this as 500A, so it will work just fine but with your
1000A shunt the E-Meter will display 1/2 the true current (i.e. 100A
displayed = 200A, 500A displayed = 1000A real-life).
A 1000A 100mV shunt is identical electrically to a 500A 50mV one, and
while it will carry the 1000A current, the E-Meter will peg at 511A once
the current exceeds 500A.
If you want the display correct for 1000A, I think you have to order the
meter set up for 1000A to start with. It might be possible to get
Xantrex to load the 1000A software for you if you ship it back to them;
you'd have to call them and find out.
> One last question: does the shunt *have* to be at traction
> pack ground?
Yes! Connect it anywhere else and you will be buying yourself a new
E-Meter.
Cheers,
Roger.

I've never ridden in an EV. In the entire city of St. Louis,
the only registered EV I know of is one lowly Corbin
Sparrow. John Lentz used to have a 240V of Optima Yellowtop,
Raptor 600, ADC9'' powered Saturn sedan, but he sold it
years ago.
I'm looking forward to seeing what riding in a well done
conversion is like, but that's not likely to happen until I
get my own conversion finished and only if that conversion
turns out nice. Maybe a trip to Kansas City or the Chicago
area might be in order to see the couple of EVs those places
have, but other than that, there aren't any road-going EVs
to see where I live. Otherwise, I'd have to take a trip to
Portland to see some of the real nice ones, but that's a
little while off. Aside from one Sparrow, I'll have the only
road going EV in my city. I am damn well going to be sure
this EV will make good 'first impressions' with the locals,
burning rubber, terrorizing law enforcement, banging on
people's windows with its sound system, and perhaps hitting
more than 130 mph in the event I take someone for a ride
over the river into Illinois on route 15, provided Ponch and
John aren't around with a radar gun. That would scare the
crap out of them and make them remember this car and of
what's possible, as gas prices continue to catch up with
reality.
Don't know when she'll be finished. The faster I earn money,
the quicker progress on the car will go(Classes being the
next limiting factor). Currently, it's in my garage being
stripped. I got some photos of the car unstripped with its
gas engine in it, showing off the amount of battery room it
has and such, but I'm waiting for the Aeronautical
Engineering department at my campus to send the photos to
me. I had to borrow their digital camera to get them.
I'm expecting to perhaps make another $3k this summer if I
can find a job or two around here, so significant progress
may or may not be made.
First thing is first. It's already been toyed with a mostly
stock gas car a little, but I'm going to strip off all
paint, sand blast and then sand paper all rust spots, remove
gas engine and all related components like gas tank, ect,
remove the body and basically strip the car down to its
chassis, sand blast that, powdercoat, prime, and paint,
learn some welding so I can then take out the original
floorboards and weld new ones in, replace the stock seats
with something lighter in weight, install five point safety
harnesses for passenger and driver, remove all sound
deadener, get fiberglass bumpers and fiberglass LeMans style
bonnet, lexon windows, fiberglass door skins, fiberglass
rockers, ect., fix the parking brake, install a full
underbelly, cover top third to top half of rear wheel wells,
shave down the door handles, remove the rain gutters,
replace the drivers' side mirror with a more aerodynamic
mirror(No passenger side mirror), sand out all exterior
imperfections, install stronger brakes, install roll bar,
then paint it a dark British racing green, replace the
electrical system, machine the brakes to reduce brake drag,
place on a new set of alloy LeMans style wheels, put on low
rolling resistance tires and then put the gas engine and
components back in. Add a nice sound system of about 300-400
watts or so, nothing too fancy or expensive but enough to
have some fun.
Now, perhaps over 200 pounds lighter than it was, much more
aerodynamic, and with a hopefully nice finish and an
uncracked windshield, I'm going to do both performance runs
and fuel economy runs and take data on each, and get a feel
for the car as the sort of race-prepped 1500 pound tincan
deathtrap I have a liking for. I'll be using a few crude
methods such as the 'tuft method' to find out where the car
generates turbulence so I can minimize drag more. While the
car is in that state, I'll be saving money for the EV
related components, making the adaptor plate and battery
boxes, and once I have the stuff for the EV, the 400 pound
gas engine will again be stripped out, as will the 100-150
pounds of related things like gas tank, exhaust, ect., and
the real conversion to electric will begin. I hope to be
able to fit as much as 25 Optimas into this thing, but time
will tell whether or not Imanage, as I don't want to throw
the weight distribution off too much and want to keep things
about 50/50, what the car manages stock. I know for a fact I
can at least fit in 18 Optimas without throwing the weight
distribution off. With 25 Optimas as an EV, with fiberglass
parts for weight reduction it would be about 2,400-2,450
pounds, and without fiberglass parts for weight reduction,
about 2,600-2,650 pounds. Both weights include driver. GVWR
is 2,350 pounds, so in both cases I'll need to install leaf
springs.
This could be finished as early as next summer, or it may
even become my senior project the semester after.
Whatever the case may be, I want this to turn out as a
butt-kickin' EV so as to make the prospect of electric drive
palletable by the normals, and maybe embarass a few local
ricers while I'm at it.
Glad to see you had the opportunity to become acquaninted
with these cars and their owners in person. Wayland already
invited me to see his car, so if I'm ever in the Portland
area, I'll certainly have to stop by. I definately look
forward to my first EV outing, whether by my own doing or by
having the good fortune to meet another EV owner that has a
decent conversion. :-)

Bring your EVs and be on TV.
The Discovery Channel will be at the NEDRA Power of DC Saturday June 11
at the Mason Dixon Dragway in Hagerstown, Maryland.
This will be a great opportunity to get EVs out on a National level.
NBC TV plans to be there as well.
Besides being on TV, racers will have a chance to win trophies and cash
prizes and of course meet with other EV enthusiasts.
See the Power of DC website for more details.
Feel free to contact me for further information about the race.

Hello, I'm new to the group. I have been interested
in electric cars for a few years, but haven't done
much to learn about them.
I'm interested in building an NEV both for puttering
around the neighborhood and when my family and I go
camping.
What are the basics to either an EV or an NEV? Is
there a simple logical drawing or something?
I mean, is it as simple as:
battery==>pot==>electric motor
Or, is it more complicated than that?
If I wanted to take an old riding lawn mower and
completely convert it to electric just for the fun of
it...and perhaps to get up to 30 mph out of it, what
components are absolutely necessary? What components
wouldn't be necessary but would be nice features, etc.
etc. etc.?
Thank you
