The report, commissioned by the state-funded industry support group Drive Oregon, also found that the industry has paid $11.9 million in state and local taxes and $20.8 million in federal taxes. Northwest Economic Research Center at PSU completed the report, which is available for download at the Drive Oregon website [ http://driveoregon.org/resources/ ]. The report cost $50,000, $40,000 paid by Drive Oregon and $10,000 covered by the Portland Development Commission. In a statement, Tom Potiowsky, director of the center and former Oregon state economist, said: "Our research indicates that the electric vehicle industry generates gross economic activity of $266.56 million, total value added of nearly $148 million and provides more than $89 million in total employee compensation. The industry continued to grow during the Great Recession, while other transportation industries suffered enormous losses." Potiowsky will be presenting the detailed findings of the report at a Drive Oregon gathering Tuesday afternoon at Kell's Irish Pub [ http://www.sustainablebusinessoregon.com/calendar_details.html?UniqueID=989 http://www.kellsirish.com/portland/events.php ]. Potiowsky will also provide a briefing on the report to state legislators and officials on Wednesday during an event at the Oregon State Capitol [ http://driveoregon.org/events/driving-oregons-economy-clean-cars-and-clean-fuels-oregon-state-capitol-feb-6th/ ]. "Drive Oregon commissioned this study to develop a clearer definition of the electric vehicle industry and its supply chain, generate a baseline evaluation of its economic impact in Oregon, and identify opportunities to leverage faster growth in the future," said Jeff Allen, Drive Oregon's executive director, in a statement. The report attaches some attractive numbers to an industry segment that has been heavily touted in Oregon for years. The state has invested heavily in electric vehicle infrastructure, leading the country in installing charging stations. Years ago, Oregon economic development types hoped to land an electric vehicle manufacturing facility, but in recent years the industry's leaders have focused on nurturing home grown electric vehicle companies and touting the state's reputation as a testing ground for EVs. Some other key findings in the report include: - Oregon's electric vehicle industry directly employs more than 400 full-time equivalent employees in some 100 firms. Electric vehicle industry employment totals more than 1,500 jobs when indirect and induced impacts are also considered. - The study identifies a number of EV-related initiatives boosting the sector in Oregon including tax incentive programs, ECOtality's EV Project, the West Coast Electric Highway, and PSU's Electric Avenue research project. - Researchers surveyed the electric vehicle industry in Oregon and found that 69 percent of 54 firms surveyed are in the manufacturing business — both vehicle manufacturers and parts and components manufacturers. - Of the companies surveyed, 17 percent have a prototype of a product. Just over 11 percent have been generating revenue for over three years.
