Ten engineering students from Queen’s University Belfast will transform an old DeLorean car into a road-worthy electric vehicle. The DeLorean conversion project is billed as “providing students with a practical project to learn about electric vehicle technology and new smart electric technologies.” It is sponsored by Northern Ireland Electricity, which said it needs to hire as many as 300 staff over the next decade to replace those who are retiring, so the project is designed to forge links with the university. They students are all now going into second year, and the project will be starting in the next couple of weeks. It will be summer 2015 by the time they have taken out the old petrol system and replaced it with an electric one. A DeLorean car featured in the adventure film Back to the Future, and the cars were built in a factory in the Dunmurry area. The vehicle being used is owned by Queen’s University, but NIE is putting money towards the scheme.
