When I design my battery pack location in my EV, The batteries are in a
fiberglass battery box insulated with 2 inches of dense blue poly foam that is
mounted in the pick up bed that is also insulated with 2 inches of this foam.
This is a total of 20 R Factor or 1/20 or 0.05 U Factor.

The unexpected resulted of having the glass hatch back that covers the battery
box compartment which is upholstery with a dark blue marine carpet with is
resistance to sun fade, that this installation becomes a solar passive panel
which allows the sun rays to heat the inside of the battery compartment.

One day going to work with the temperature at -33 below 0 F., I park by EV with
the glass hatch back facing south. It's only get that cold on a clear day here
in Montana. At work, I plug in to a 120 volt receptacle and turn the ampere to
1 amp just to keep the electrolyte moving.

Came out at noon to check the batteries, and when I lifted up the hatch cover,
it was over 70 F. in the compartment. Ok, I know from now on to park the EV
with the hatch facing south from now on. At the end of our work shift, I turn
on the cab heaters using the transfer switch to select the out board power to
turn on the heaters which defrosted all the glass.

The heat of the sun also melted off all the snow off the car dark blue panels.
Many of the ICE had problems starting there engines and some not at all. I
ended up jump starting many of these ICE's with the heavy duty deep cycle 12
volt accessory battery which was also insulated with a electric battery
blanket. I first started up the EV, so that the inverter alternator which is
design to charge this battery at 13.5 to 15 volts. Turn on the idle control
so the rpm of the motor is at least 1100 rpm to excite the alternator.

I was the first one out of the parking lot which have snow drifts up to 18
inches which I blazed a trail for the ICE. Want to get to the highway first,
because I did not want the keep braking my EV for these slow driving EV's going
down a glaze ice steep hill of two miles long. I just let my EV go at speed
and do not dare touch the brakes where my speed could get up to 80 mph at
times.

Up dated all the specifications, but the photos still show the old Trojan
batteries, Vacuum Brake system instead of the Hydro Brake unit and the old
heavy wheels.
For some reason, I cannot change the old photos.

That's a good point. But the same would be true for auto body panels. I
wonder what they have in mind to deal with this.

Maybe OK in the south but it wouldn't work very well in the cold north.

It's much better to have the batteries safely inside at room temperature
rather than outside soaking at -20.
