Smart recently announced launch of the fortwo electric drive in China
marking the electric fortwo’s entry into it 14th market, but sales began in
Japan way earlier.

BRABUS (which is smart’s tuner), delivers its own version of the fortwo
electric drive with 5 kW of additional power and 5 more Nm of torque to
bring the total numbers to 60 kW and 135 Nm. With such a drivetrain in
place, the dark smart zips from 0 to 60 in under 10 seconds.

This time, the smart fortwo BRABUS electric drive comes to the Tokyo Motor
Show, but is that still a Mennekes plug we see in the photo? Thankfully,
smart didn’t forgot to install a J1772 type inlet. But still, the electric
smart will not benefit from vast network of fast DC chargers like i-MiEVs or
even the BMW i3 can in Japan.

In Europe, smart ed can be optionally fitted with a 3-phase 22 kW on-board
charger and can use one of over 1,500 22 kW points installed by RWE utility
company alone. This shortens charging time from 6-7 hours to 1.

We asked Smart USA boss Mark Webster about the prospect of this special
edition ForTwo ED hitting US shores

“Well, we have the BRABUS trim edition here, which is part of the
personality of smart. We have a great relationship both here (in the US)
and worldwide with Brabus, but as of right now we are not going to offer the
BRABUS powertrain version, just the trim level version. Some of our dealers
offer that, and do very well in special markets, like Miami and Los
Angeles.”

The electric smart fourtwo has been launched in China, following on from
Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan.

The fourtwo electric drive features a 55kW electric motor delivering 130Nm
of torque and goes from 0 to 60km/h in 4.8 seconds with a top speed of
125km/h. A lithium-ion battery with 17.6 kWh provides enough energy to cover
a range of 145km.

The vehicle was presented to the Chinese public at the Guangzhou Motor Show
this month.

The company said that, as the world's largest automotive market today
already, China will also play a pivotal role in boosting market penetration
of alternative drive systems thanks to the supportive environment created by
the Chinese government. It added that experts forecast that China could
become the world's largest market for such vehicles as well.

Dr Annette Winkler, head of smart, said: ‘Our smart electric drive was one
of the first all-electric cars and is the clear market leader in Germany. We
are now bringing this successful vehicle to China, and are the first
European manufacturer to launch an all-electric car on this market. Offering
powerful driving pleasure with zero local emissions, the smart electric
drive is perfectly suited to China's big cities.’
