Nissan Takes to Twitter, Makes Fun of Tesla
20 March 2014 BY ABBIE SARFO

Tesla Motors just can’t catch a break. In an instance of sore winning, the
Nissan Leaf’s social media team poked fun at the beleaguered electric car
company through Twitter, autoblog.com reported.

Nissan’s tweet, as it appears on autoblog.com, said “It’s okay #NewJersey,
you can still #GoElectric with the #NissanLEAF #EV.” Accompanying the text
is an image of the Leaf, with the caption “The Nissan Leaf is available in
all 50 states, including New Jersey.”

Tesla’s battle with New Jersey is well known. According to nj.com, the Motor
Vehicle Commission virtually banned Tesla from selling cars in the state.
The reason is Tesla’s direct-sale business model: Tesla sells its cars
straight from the manufacturer to the consumer, cutting out the middleman
car dealer.

While Tesla maintains this sales model creates fair pricing for the
customer, the Motor Vehicle Commission asserts that car dealers promote
competitive pricing, along with better access to warranty claims and other
services.

Nissan, on the other hand, has been angling to make a mark on the electric
car market. The company’s newest offering, the Leaf, is in direct
competition with Tesla’s fleet. It’s not surprising, then, that Nissan used
Tesla’s woes as a springboard for self-promotion.

Yet there’s another layer to this rivalry. Last week, Nissan’s PR chief
Simon Sproule left the company to become Tesla’s Vice President of
Communications and Marketing, mediabistro.com said. Possibly, Nissan was
still sore from this “poaching” of their personnel.

Nissan has since acknowledged that the tweet, while in the spirit of good
fun, was in poor taste. The Leaf Twitter account is run by a separate ad
agency, complex.com reported. As told to autoblog.com, senior social
communications specialist Rob Robinson said the offending post "was not a
tweet that was reviewed or approved by Nissan. We saw it and asked them to
take it down." As per Nissan’s request, the tweet has since been taken down.

As Tesla would probably agree, it’s never nice to kick a man while he’s
down.
