Regen is also a big consideration for a plug-in hybrid vehicle. With regen
ability, even after otherwise depleting the batteries, you can use a minimal
regen load while cruising to keep just enough charge in the batteries to still
be able to use the electric motor for acceleration. This lets you avoid heavy
usage of the internal combustion motor for acceleration and instead run it more
in its optimal efficiency band.

That is, take an hit of couple miles per gallon for a short while while the gas
engine is at its most efficient in order to avoid significantly using the gas
engine when it's at its least efficient.
