Vickers is team captain. ] West Wilkes High School’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Team reached a new milestone when its fully battery-powered 2000 Mazda Miata was driven from the school in Millers Creek to Appalachian State University in Boone and back on the afternoon of Nov. 6. The 62-mile round trip culminated the work of West Wilkes team members on the Miata since 2007, said Chris Tolbert, the team’s coach and technology, engineering and design teacher at West Wilkes. Tolbert drove the car rather than a student due to uncertainty about how it would perform climbing from an elevation of about 1,400 feet above sea level in Millers Creek to 3,333 feet in Boone, but he said the trip “went without a glitch.” Tolbert said that as he drove through the ASU campus, he “had tears of joy remembering all the students who have contributed to this accomplishment dating back to 2007…. I could not be more proud of what all the team members, volunteers, sponsors and school system have accomplished.” Caleb Vickers, team captain, presented the Miata and explained the project to about 20 people, including ASU students on the university’s Solar Vehicle Team and faculty, outside Katherine Harper Hall. Tolbert is one of the ASU team’s faculty advisers. Other members of the West Wilkes team also were present to send the miata off to Boone. The Miata’s battery was “bump charged” as the group from West Wilkes ate supper. Tolbert said the amount of recharging it took to fully restore the battery told the group how much voltage it took to get from West Wilkes to Boone. In addition to Vickers, this year’s team consists of Issac Ritenour, Andrew Cheek, Robert Dancy, Cody Bowlin, Brandon Hutchens, Justus Church, Harley Herman, Justin Barlowe, Michael Foster and Jack Terrell. To be conservative, Tolbert went about 35 mph up the Blue Ridge Mountain escarpment to Deep Gap, with grades of 6-8 percent. He said the Miata had more than enough power to pull the mountain at the 55 mph speed limit, but this strategy was chosen to reduce power consumption. He maintained a speed limit of 45 to 55 mph between Deep Gap and Boone. With team members in a “chase vehicle” accompanying him, the trip to Boone took about an hour. Complicating matters was the weather, with wind gusts over 40 mph and temperatures dropping to near freezing on the return trip. Preparations for the trip to Boone included driving the Miata over the Brushy Mountains to Sugar Loaf Elementary School in northern Alexander County, where West Wilkes students made a presentation to students at the school. West Wilkes team members earlier replaced a lithium iron phosphate battery in the Miata with a lithium manganese battery from a Nissan LEAF, which Tolbert said gave the car enough range to get to Boone. He said this improvement and others to the car were possible due to donations and support from sponsors. West Wilkes electric vehicle teams have fared well with the Miata in annual EV competitions at the N.C. Center for Automotive Research in Garysburg since 2011. These include different categories of competition, including vehicle design, autocross, acceleration, mechanical troubleshooting, efficiency and student presentations. The first auto converted to an electric vehicle by the West team was a 1983 Ford Ranger pickup. Work on the pickup started in 2005. Team members next started working on the Miata. West Wilkes EV Team members have gone on to various careers, including as a drone operator in the Marines, as a mechanic on Osprey helicopters in the Marines, as a member of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s NASCAR race team, in mechanical engineering and other areas.
