In an interview with Bloomberg yesterday, Volkswagen AG said it has bought a
5% stake in QuantumScape Corp, a battery startup initiated by former
Stanford University researchers in 2012. The ownership stake comes with an
option to increase it in the future.

The German automaker aims to move ahead in the electric vehicle (EV) market,
which -according to most analysts- is the future of the auto industry.
Through investing in QuantumScape, the world’s second largest automaker is
entering a venture that aims to disrupt the EV battery market space.

The automaker will be producing solid-state, fireproof batteries that
provide much more mileage, as compared to the lithium-ion battery packs
currently used in plugged-in EVs.

According to Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen: “I see great potential in
this new technology, possibly boosting the range to as much as 700
kilometers (430 miles).” The mileage is almost double the range provided by
Tesla Motors Inc's Model S Sedan.

The solid-state batteries will give Volkswagen an edge over Tesla. The new
technology will be forwarded to the company’s luxury brands, including Audi
and Porsche, which will give direct competition to the Model S.

Moreover, Volkswagen's new technology can have an adverse effect on Tesla,
because Tesla plans to spend $5 billion to build a Gigafactory for mass
producing lithium-ion battery.
