I agree. The boom may be passed now but, just a few years ago, salvagers were scouring the countryside for steel. They were paying $.20+ per pound for stuff that was fairly difficult to reach. Old equipment and pipe that was overgrown with brush and trees. Several of my neighbors sold tens of thousands of dollars worth. An abandoned 12" pipeline was worth digging up. It took a crew of 5+ to run a tracked backhoe, cutting torches, etc to get it.

Though I haven't heard of prices above $.10 for "carry into the yard" scrap steel. It might be that we have a lively scrap market because of the proximity of Nucor Steel which makes steel almost exclusively from scrap.

Auto salvage yards here in Texas are supposed to get a title for the junked cars they receive. Absence of title could reduce the value of the car to be junked.
