Peter,
In my area of the world, scrap is scrap and if someone has a couple hundred
lbs, scrap haulers will give him something for the scrap.
In any case it is just a suggestion, he and you may be surprised…
I agree. The boom may be passed now but, just a few years ago,
salvagers were scouring the countryside for steel. They were paying
$.20+ per pound for stuff that was fairly difficult to reach. Old
equipment and pipe that was overgrown with brush and trees. Several of
my neighbors sold tens of thousands of dollars worth. An abandoned 12"
pipeline was worth digging up. It took a crew of 5+ to run a tracked
backhoe, cutting torches, etc to get it.
Though I haven't heard of prices above $.10 for "carry into the yard"
scrap steel. It might be that we have a lively scrap market because of
the proximity of Nucor Steel which makes steel almost exclusively from
scrap.
Auto salvage yards here in Texas are supposed to get a title for the
junked cars they receive. Absence of title could reduce the value of
the car to be junked.
