In this instance, that package is the Kia Soul, a square-shaped “urban passenger vehicle” first rolled out to the public in 2009. It’s funky shape proved to be popular, not only with younger drivers, but older ones, as well, who found the car’s tall interior and wide windows offered lots of bright light and great visibility. The Soul was updated in 2012, and an electric version was added for the 2015 model year. The electric version, or EV, was our test drive this week, and it is Kia’s first mass market, all-electric zero emissions vehicle to be sold in the U.S. ... But, for the EV, you’ll be getting a vehicle that has an unique look wrapped up in eco-friendly technology. The trade off? You’re going to have to plan your life around an EPA estimated range of about 105 miles per full charge. Thankfully you can plug the car into any standard 120v outlet, or a conventional 240v EV charger. Then select from a trickle charging port that takes up to 24 hours with the standard 120v outlet, or a fast charging port, which can get the job done in about 35 minutes with a 50kW-output DC fast charger. The EV version has exterior color options that are different from the regular Soul models. Two-tone paint includes a roof color of either white, black or red, paired with a body color of blue, black or gray. The list of standard equipment on the EV is good. It includes a Navigation with eight-inch screen, Rear Camera Display, Bluetooth hands free operation, power windows, power driver’s seat, cruise control, and push button start. Air conditioning is one of the largest energy drains on an electric vehicle, but the Soul EV’s HVAC system has been designed in a variety of ways to provide comfort without draining the car’s range. One way, for example, is to select a “Driver Only” vent selection which will stop airflow to the passenger side.
