Police in Henan announced yesterday the successful capture of a gang of
notorious shallot thieves who had recently killed a farmer while looting his
land of all the onions they could carry.

According to the police report, in the early hours of August 25th, a farmer
and his wife from outside of Xinxiang city happened upon three people
stealing from their crop of onions. The elderly farmer confronted the
thieves, who used either bricks or stones to beat him and his wife to the
ground. The farmer would later die from his injuries, according to The
Paper.

The gang then took off on an electric tricycle loaded down with 50 kilograms
of shallots.

Police soon issued an alert and description of the suspects given by the
farmer's wife and announced a 30,000RMB reward for information that would
lead to their capture. However, the initial police report left out the fact
of any confrontation, much less that an elderly villager had been bludgeoned
to death. Fellow villagers told local reporters that they were concerned
that police would decide to withhold this kind of information. Shallot
thieves are one thing. Murderous shallot thieves are quite another.

Henan police captured the three suspects on Wednesday before their shallot
spree could continue any farther.

No reports yet if the police have decided to give themselves the reward
money.
