Glendale has no plans for golf cart lanes, at least now

The Republic regularly asks West Valley leaders to weigh in on issues of the
day.

This week’s question: Surprise recently installed a dedicated lane for golf
carts for several miles on Bullard Avenue. The new lane has received some
complaints from residents who question the need for it and dislike the
effects on car traffic. Is your city considering creating similar types of
lanes, and do you think doing so (whether such a lane is under
consideration) is a good idea?

Glendale [AZ], which has over the years concentrated on laying out 62 miles
of bike lanes, has no immediate plans for installation of dedicated golf
cart or neighborhood electric vehicle (ARS Statute 28-101.23 & .28
respectfully) lanes. Usually, the need for these is along arterial roadways
and, according to the Arizona Statute cited earlier, traffic cannot exceed
35 mph.

Arterial roads are usually high-capacity urban roads meant to deliver
traffic from collector roads to freeways and highways, and between urban
centers at the highest level of service possible.

However, it wasn’t that long ago that bike lanes were not a consideration in
traffic planning and road construction as they most definitely are today. So
as the demographics change, public transportation becomes more intensive,
the use of these vehicles could necessitate the planning of these lanes in
the future.
