The car-sharing service has entered into an agreement with the province’s power utility to allow its users access to the stations. Communauto pays a fixed rate of $2.50 per charge, no matter how long the car is charged for. Communauto spokesperson Marco Viviani said the agreement is for the 50 self-service cars that are part of Communauto’s Auto-Mobile fleet, which members can take for one-way trips without reserving in advance. The fleet is comprised of 50 Nissan LEAF cars, which are fully electric and 250 hybrid gas-electric cars. Viviani said the agreement will allow the company to build a larger network of electric cars, and alleviate some of the burden on Communauto workers, who have handled the bulk of the recharging up to this point. “Now, we recharge the cars every three days,” Viviani said. “We can delay the need for our intervention with this agreement. The fewer cars that need to be charged, the better availability for users.” Users will know the status of the charging stations beforehand to see if they are being used. They can park the cars there once they are done with them, or they can stop for a quick recharge and continue on their way. Viviani said this agreement is also good for users, because charging stations are located in dense parts of the city, so it could be a way for members to have access to a reserved parking spot. It takes four to six hours for the cars to be charged. A car can travel about 130 km without using heat on a full charge.
