New electric vehicles have already been given a trial run in Taranaki
]

Posties will start picking up parcels as well as delivering them in a new
move announced by New Zealand Post.

The company is investing in a new fleet of Paxster electric delivery
vehicles, which will replace bicycles for residential areas in the larger
centres.

It has set aside $15 million to purchase the vehicles over the next two
years and the first shipment of 50 will arrive in the middle of this year.

They will each be able to transport 200kg of mail. Posties will deliver
parcels and regular mail, and pick up items from people's homes. The
vehicles have a top speed of 45km per hour.

"The vehicles will give us extra capacity to meet the growing demand created
by online shopping and give us an edge in the competitive parcel delivery
market," Ashley Smout, service delivery chief operating officer for New
Zealand Post, said.

"They'll allow us to be more efficient and, over time, enable new and
convenient services to residential customers such as parcel pick-ups,
returns and re-directions. Capacity will also be freed up in our vans so
couriers can concentrate on business customers."

Smout said it was one of the ways New Zealand Post was improving its parcel
services. "We're working on a range of options that will give people more
control over when and where they receive their parcels."

Smout said trials had shown the eco-vehicles were safe to use on the
footpath.

The vehicles will be used in areas where the terrain is suitable and where
permission has been granted by the local council. New Zealand Post is now
working with staff and unions on detailed plans for the national rollout.

It has been predicted that the move will result in the loss of 100 jobs. New
Zealand Post expects up to 2000 jobs to have gone from its operations by
2028.
