Yeah, it's hard for non tech people to realize there's a difference between kW and kWh. If they have the patients to read your explanation, they might end up understanding.

Another approach would be to use air pressure as a metaphor. Let's say you want to fill a car tire with air. Explain using a bicycle pump to an air compressor. Without using any math, it's pretty easy for someone to understand the bicycle pump will take longer, even though both tools will work. And they should be able to easily grasp the difference between air pressure and volume. Then, in one sentence, translate that to kW and kWh.
