You can also buy a TPMS "programmer" that lets you associate new/different TPMS sensors (in the tire) with the Leaf's computer.

[This is useful if you change from winter to summer tires for example. It also allows you to specify the location of each tire, useful for rotating tires if the car shows you the specific tire that has a low pressure alert (my 2015 Leaf just shows a general warning light, and it's up to the user to figure out which of the 4 tires is low).

You can buy 3rd party / aftermarket tire pressure sensors, but would need a tire shop (or a tire remover) to install them in your own rims. The TPMS programmer allows you to associate them with the vehicle.

Any tire shop will do this for you if you don't want to go to the trouble yourself.

Here is one example I've used:

Redscooter,
The TPMS(s) on Amazon are stand-alone systems. Other than an optional power
connection, they do not "work with" any systems in any car, to
my knowledge. Why would you want that? These TPMS units just sit on the
dash, or any reasonable spot. They sound an audible alarm and flash the
display when any tire starts getting hot or losing air pressure. I would
bet that the dedicated OEM sensors for any car would cost more for one
sensor than my entire TPMS for any car. I have two old cars and a
motorcycle, and all of my vehicles have these independent valve-cap TPMS
units. Each TPMS here is reliable, inexpensive, and easily maintainable.

Redscooter,
Amazon has all types, from about US$ 40.00 and up ('way up). Get a
display
that you can read in strong sunlight. Get a system that has replaceable
batteries in the sensors. The valve-cap versions are fine; easy and
cheap.
You do not need sensors internal to the tires. Some TPMS are fed by a
USB
cable, and some have solar power. Plan on re-balancing the wheels. Hope
that helps.
    thnxs
is there a valve cap version, with changeable battery, that would
beep,.. for would work with 2012 leaf on board system?
